Georgies
What's a Georgie?
The ACT Georgies is the official volunteer organization of ACT. Anyone who has volunteered his/her time
in any aspect of theatre's activities is considered a Georgie.
Where does the Georgies name come from?
Since many of the volunteers at ACT "wear many different hats" throughout one or more production
or season, the organization was dubbed "The Georgies" after George Spelvin, the pseudonym actors
use in a show's cast list for multiple characters played in that show for which they do not desire name recognition.
The Georgies Mission Statment
The purpose of this organization is threefold:
- To promote activity and interest in the theatre arts by involving
all who care to join. - To have an Annual Awards Banquet to recognize volunteers of the Angelo Civic
Theatre. - To provide a liason between the volunteers and the Angelo Civic Theatre Board of Directors
History of the Georgies Organization
The Angelo Civic Theatre Georgies were formed as the official organization for ACT volunteers
in 1983. The organization got its start in the late spring or early summer of 1983 when Alan Dean
suggested to some other volunteers that a banquet be organized to celebrate the work of the previous
season ('82-'83 season). Working with a budget of about $7.50, the banquet was held later that summer
with the Georgie Awards being a can of Spam nailed to a board. The organization was formalized and
officially recognized by the ACT Board of Directors shortly thereafter. Today, The Georgies still hold an
annual Awards Banquet, albeit with a much larger budget and more formal awards than the original banquet!
How To Become a Georgie
There are no dues to pay or requirements to fulfill. Simply put, all you have to do is get involved!
You can start out by coming to an audition to either audition for a part or to see about helping with
behind the scenes stuff. Saturdays during pre-production are the biggest work days to build and paint
sets or work on costumes, so, that's a good time to come help. If you want to usher, house manage, or
find out what else you can help with, just call the box office (949-4400) for more information.
